Timing Your Trek Into the Mist

The Best Seasons for Unforgettable Gorilla Encounters

While mountain gorilla trekking is possible year-round, some months offer drier trails, clearer views, and a more comfortable journey through the rainforest. Whether you’re planning for perfect photography conditions or fewer crowds, here’s how to time your trek just right.

🦍 June to September – Peak Season Perfection

The dry season means firmer trails and excellent trekking conditions. With lush greenery and clear views, it’s the most popular time to visit—so permits should be booked well in advance.

🦍 December to February – Quiet Trails & Clear Skies

Another dry window offering good weather and fewer visitors. It’s a lovely time to trek if you prefer a quieter experience without compromising comfort or sightings.

🦍 March to May – Wet but Rewarding

Expect muddy trails and frequent rain, but the forests are lush, and crowds are minimal. You may get discounted rates on accommodation—and incredible moody photography.

🦍 October to November – Shoulder Season Serenity

These months bring short rains, but trekking is still possible. Trails can be slippery, but the forest is vibrant, and gorilla encounters remain just as powerful.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Meet the Mountain Gorillas

Long-sleeved clothing, sturdy hiking boots, gloves, a waterproof jacket, and a good camera.

The minimum trekking age is 15, making it an ideal adventure for teenagers and adults.

Gorilla permits are limited—book well in advance to secure your spot.

Gorilla trekking can range from moderate to challenging, depending on the gorilla family’s location and the terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Porters are available to assist with carrying equipment and providing support during the hike.

Gorillas are susceptible to human illnesses. If you are feeling unwell, it’s advised to postpone your trek. Vaccinations and prophylactic measures against tropical diseases, such as malaria, should be considered. Consult your healthcare provider before traveling.

Permit costs vary by country and are subject to change. As of the latest information, permits in Rwanda are priced higher than those in Uganda. It’s essential to check current rates and availability well in advance of your planned trek.

Visitors are required to maintain a distance of at least 7 meters (about 23 feet) from the gorillas to minimize disturbance and the risk of disease transmission. This guideline is strictly enforced by park authorities.
