Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Bordering Botswana in South Africa’s North West Province, Madikwe Game Reserve is the fifth-largest reserve in the country and is home to a great number of animal species. It contains a wild dog reserve, and is inhabited by the world-renowned Big Five, as well as Brown Hyenas, Cheetahs, and Aardwolf. Visitors will also be surrounded by over 300 bird species, including vulture, ostrich, and the large kori bustard. The landscape is characterised by vast grasslands, woodlands, and the rugged Tshwene Tshwene hills - creating enthralling scenes that often attract photographers and artists. Visitors can look forward to sunset drinks overlooking the Madikwe Dam. Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the only reserves in South Africa that is malaria free.

    Day 1 - 4

    Accommodation at Sanctuary Makanyane Safari Lodge comprises eight luxurious, secluded suites, each overlooking the Marico River. Each suite has spectacular glass-walled bedrooms and a spacious bathroom, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding forest and the river. The stylish main lodge is on the edge of a ravine overlooking a waterhole frequently visited by game and has a spacious lounge and dining area. Fine wines from the award-winning wine list complement exceptional cuisine created by the team of internationally trained chefs. There is also a spa, an air-conditioned gym and heated infinity swimming pool. The main lodge provides complimentary Wi-Fi, as well as a curio shop, a library area, and an upstairs den.

The road transfer from Johannesburg to Sanctuary Makanyane will take +-4 hours. Once you arrive at the lodge, you will have time to settle in before heading on the first afternoon game drive.

South Africa: 19-day Cape Town, Garden Route & Madikwe Safari

This was my second trip through Indigo Safaris, after Papua New Guinea in August. It came about at the last minute as the coup in Madagascar cancelled a trip booked previously through another company. Christopher spring into action and put together a wonderful itinerary for a trip combining a self-drive along the Garden Route that was so much easier than I thought it would be, tours around Cape Town, and a safari to Madikwe before returning to the Cape.
The accommodations were excellent, and that was before we got an upgrade in Cape Town, the scenery so varied, and the wildlife stunning. I'm looking forward to seeing what can be put together for our next trip with more than one week's notice!
