Four species that connect Dominica's shallow reefs to the deep water where the island's resident sperm whales feed.

Why Squid Matter to Dominica's Marine Life

The prey behind the island's most famous residents

Dominica is best known for its resident population of sperm whales, but the waters that draw those whales to the island's west coast also support a varied population of squid, and it is this food supply that keeps the whales in residence. Squid here range from the reef squid encountered by divers in a few metres of water to the deep-water species that the sperm whales themselves hunt at depth.

Squid form a central part of the marine food web around Dominica, and four species in particular illustrate the range of habitats and life histories found here: the Caribbean reef squid, the diamondback squid, the orangeback flying squid and the giant squid.

Caribbean Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea)

The Caribbean reef squid is the species most likely to be seen by divers and snorkellers along Dominica's fringing reefs. It is a medium-sized squid, reaching around 20 centimetres in mantle length, with a torpedo-shaped body and a fin running almost the full length of the mantle, which gives it a distinctive rippling motion in the water.

It is found from Florida and Bermuda through the West Indies and along Caribbean coastlines generally, favouring clear, shallow water down to about 100 metres, though it is most often encountered in the top ten metres over coral reefs, seagrass beds and turtle grass meadows.

The species has a short life cycle and, like most squid, is semelparous, meaning each individual reproduces once before dying. After mating, females lay strings of eggs attached to the reef or seabed and die shortly afterwards. Hatchlings emerge fully formed, with functional fins and ink sacs, at a mantle length of only 8 to 9 millimetres. They spend one to two weeks as semi-planktonic para-larvae near the surface, feeding on small planktonic prey such as mysid shrimp, before settling into shallow seagrass beds and reef margins as juveniles. As they mature they become more capable swimmers and typically form loose schools of four to thirty individuals.

Caribbean reef squid are largely piscivorous, though their diet also includes small crustaceans and other molluscs. They consume a substantial amount relative to their size, often taking thirty to sixty per cent of their body weight in food each day. They tend to rest during the day and hunt at night, using excellent vision to identify prey and a striking range of skin colour and posture changes to lure or disorientate it. Once within range, prey is seized with the club-like ends of two long tentacles and drawn to a sharp beak, which cuts it into pieces small enough to be processed by the radula, a rasping tongue-like structure common to molluscs. Caribbean reef squid, in turn, form part of the diet of the diamondback squid.

The primary prey of Dominica's sperm whales

Diamondback Squid (Thysanoteuthis rhombus)

Where the reef squid belongs to the shallow, sunlit world of the coral reef, the diamondback squid inhabits far deeper water and rarely, if ever, comes within sight of a diver. It is named for its distinctive diamond, or rhomboid, shaped fins, which run the length of a relatively large, muscular mantle. This is the species considered to be the principal prey of Dominica's resident sperm whales, which hunt it in the deep underwater canyons running off the island's west coast.

The diamondback squid grows quickly and lives for only around a year. Daily growth rates of the mantle have been recorded at between roughly 1.4 and 4.8 millimetres, and both sexes reach sexual maturity at about six months of age. Spawning takes place over an extended period from May to December, with a peak around July.

As adults, diamondback squid are typically found at depths of 400 to 650 metres, which places them well within the diving range of a sperm whale, known to routinely descend to between 700 and 1,000 metres in search of food during dives that can last up to fifty minutes. Deeper dives are often undertaken. Diet changes markedly as the squid matures: juveniles feed mainly on crustaceans, along with small cephalopods and fish, while adults and sub-adults take a broader range of prey dominated by fish and other squid, generally targeting slower-moving or inactive species that are easier to capture in low light.

Orangeback Flying Squid (Sthenoteuthis pteropus)

A third species worth noting is the orangeback flying squid, a member of the Ommastrephidae family found throughout the tropical Atlantic, generally to depths of around 200 metres. Although it has not been documented specifically as prey for Dominica's sperm whales in the way the diamondback squid has, it occupies the same broad mid-water environment and forms part of the wider pool of squid species available to deep-diving predators across the tropical Atlantic.

The orangeback flying squid is fast-growing and short-lived, characteristics common among oceanic squid species that must complete their life cycle before falling prey to larger predators. Its diet consists mainly of small mid-water fish such as myctophids, along with other cephalopods and crustaceans, and its feeding behaviour is considered highly opportunistic, adapting to whatever prey is locally abundant.

The largest invertebrate, and the least seen

Giant Squid (Architeuthis dux)

No account of the squid of Dominica's waters is complete without the giant squid, the largest of all invertebrates and the species most closely bound up in the folklore of the deep. Mature females can reach a total length of around 12 to 13 metres including the two long feeding tentacles, with a mantle length of up to about 2.25 metres; males are appreciably smaller, reaching around 10 metres in total length with a mantle length of about 1 metre. The animal is cosmopolitan, occurring in deep water in every ocean basin, and is generally recorded between roughly 300 and 1,000 metres, which places it squarely in the depth band that Dominica's sperm whales exploit off the island's west coast.

Almost everything known about the species has been pieced together from stranded or net-caught specimens and from the stomach contents of sperm whales, which are its principal predator. Circular scars left by the toothed suckers of giant squid tentacles are a common sight on the heads and flanks of large sperm whales, and beaks recovered from whale stomachs remain one of the most reliable indicators of where the species occurs. The first confirmed footage of a live giant squid in its natural habitat was not obtained until the twenty-first century, and no verified sighting has been documented in Dominican waters specifically. I frequently see feeding tentacles trailing out of the corner of sperm whales' mouths that measure seven to eight metres in length, and have come across the partially eaten remains of tentacles up to four metres long.

In life history the giant squid follows the broad cephalopod pattern, though on a far greater scale. Growth is rapid and the lifespan is short, probably no more than about five years, with age estimated from growth rings in the statoliths. It is an ambush predator of the mid and deep water, taking deep-sea fish and other squid, which it seizes with its two extensible feeding tentacles before drawing them to the beak. Whether or not it forms a regular part of the diet of the whales that gather off Dominica, it belongs to the same deep-water community and is the clearest illustration of how large a squid can grow in the darkness below the reef.

Squid as a Link in Dominica’s Marine Ecosystem

How four species connect reef to deep water

Taken together, these four species show how squid connect very different layers of Dominica’s marine environment. The Caribbean reef squid lives out its short life within sight of the shore, playing its part in the reef food web as both predator and prey. The diamondback squid and species such as the orangeback flying squid occupy the darker, colder water hundreds of metres down, forming the deep-water link that ultimately sustains the sperm whales for which Dominica is so well known. Each has adapted its life cycle, growth rate and hunting behaviour to its depth and habitat, but all share the short lifespan, rapid growth and single reproductive event that are characteristic of squid generally.

Where reef squid, deep-diving whales and their prey come together

Travellers exploring Dominica’s fringing reefs on a dive or snorkel outing stand a reasonable chance of meeting a school of Caribbean reef squid over the coral or turtle grass beds. Further offshore, those swimming with Dominica’s sperm whales are, in effect, watching the visible end of a food chain built largely on deep-water squid such as the diamondback squid, hunted in canyons the whales can reach but divers cannot. Seeing both in the course of a single trip gives a fuller picture of how Dominica’s marine environment fits together, from the reef margin down to water the light barely reaches.

What travellers usually want to know before visiting

There is a high possibility, yes. The Caribbean reef squid is regularly encountered by divers and snorkellers over Dominica’s fringing reefs, seagrass beds and turtle grass meadows, most often in the top ten metres of water and typically in loose schools of four to thirty individuals.

Dominica’s resident sperm whales feed largely on the diamondback squid, which they hunt at depths of 400 to 650 metres in the underwater canyons off the island’s west coast. The wider mid-water community, including species such as the orangeback flying squid, forms part of the same deep-water food supply.

No verified sighting of a live giant squid has been documented in Dominican waters specifically. Its presence is inferred from the circular sucker scars left on sperm whales and from tentacle fragments observed trailing from whales’ mouths, along with beaks recovered from whale stomachs elsewhere in the species’ range.

Four species illustrate the range found here: the Caribbean reef squid in shallow reef habitat, the diamondback squid and orangeback flying squid in the mid and deep water, and the giant squid in the deepest water the island’s sperm whales exploit. Other species are likely present but less well documented.

Caribbean reef squid can be encountered on Dominica’s reefs throughout the year, since the species does not follow the same seasonal migration pattern as the sperm whales. Calm, clear conditions generally improve visibility for spotting them.
