How Sperm Whales Hunt in the Deep Ocean

Two kilometres below the surface, in water with no light at all, a sperm whale is listening for its next meal. It cannot see the squid it is hunting, and the squid cannot hear the whale coming. What follows is one of the more remarkable predator-prey relationships in the natural world, built entirely on sound, pressure, and patience.

Sperm whales are the largest of the toothed whales and one of the deepest-diving mammals on the planet. Adult whales, particularly males, will regularly descend beyond a thousand metres and sometimes past two thousand in search of squid, spending up to 50 minutes on a single dive before returning to the surface to breathe.

Understanding how they manage this, in complete darkness and under crushing pressure, tells us a great deal about one of the ocean’s most capable hunters. It is also, as it happens, why a small island in the Eastern Caribbean called Dominica has become one of the best places in the world to watch sperm whales, and to understand this hunting behaviour at close range.

🐋 What makes a sperm whale’s head built for hunting?

A sperm whale’s head is unlike that of any other animal, and much of it is given over to sound production rather than brain space. Inside sits the spermaceti organ, a large chamber of oil that whalers once prized and that scientists now believe helps focus and amplify the clicks the whale produces for echolocation. Air is passed back and forth through structures in the nasal passages, generating a sharp click that is then shaped and directed forward by the spermaceti organ and a lower chamber known as the junk. The result is one of the loudest sounds produced by any animal, aimed like a beam into the water ahead of the whale.

This adaptation exists for one reason above all others, which is to find food in an environment where eyesight is close to useless. Below a few hundred metres, sunlight barely penetrates, and by a thousand metres there is none at all. A sperm whale does not need to see a squid to catch it. It needs only to hear the echo bouncing back.

🐋 How do sperm whales find squid in total darkness?

As a sperm whale descends, it produces a steady rhythm of loud clicks, sometimes described as sounding like a slow-ticking clock. These are known as usual clicks, and they are used for long-range echolocation, sweeping the water ahead and around the whale for the echo of a returning signal. Researchers have found that these clicks are directional and powerful enough to detect prey at a considerable distance, giving the whale time to adjust course as it hunts.

Once a whale detects something promising, the pattern of clicking changes. The clicks speed up dramatically into what is known as a creak, or buzz, similar in principle to the terminal buzz produced by an echolocating bat closing in on an insect. These buzzes typically last between one and five and a half seconds and occur at depths of roughly 300 to 1,200 metres, marking the final, fast-paced phase of an attempted capture. Data collected from tagged whales suggests that a sperm whale may attempt as many as 17 prey captures during a single deep dive, each one preceded by this acceleration in clicking as the whale closes the distance.

🐋 How deep do sperm whales dive, and for how long?

Sperm whales are extraordinary breath-hold divers, though the numbers vary depending on the individual and the purpose of the dive. Typical foraging dives last around 45 minutes and reach depths of 1,000 to 2,000 metres, though sperm whales are capable of diving considerably deeper and holding their breath for close to two hours in exceptional circumstances. Between dives, a whale spends time at the surface breathing and recovering, building up the oxygen stores it will need for the next descent.

This is a costly way to feed. Every dive represents a significant investment of energy and time, which is presumably why sperm whales have evolved such a sophisticated sonar system in the first place. A hunting method this expensive only makes sense if it reliably locates enough squid to justify the dive, and for sperm whales, whose diet is dominated by squid of various sizes, it evidently does.

🐋 How much does a Sperm whale need to eat?

The appetite involved is considerable. Estimates generally put a sperm whale's daily intake at somewhere around three per cent of its body weight, which for an adult female of fifteen tonnes works out at roughly 450 to 500 kilograms of squid a day, and rather more again for a large male. Since most of that is made up of squid averaging 20 kilograms each, a whale may need to catch several hundred individual animals in a day, which explains why it makes ten or more deep dives in every twenty-four hours and spends the greater part of its life either hunting or recovering between hunts. Taken across the species as a whole, sperm whales are thought to remove tens of millions of tonnes of squid from the deep ocean each year, a figure comparable to the entire global fishing catch. It is worth bearing in mind while watching a whale rest at the surface off Dominica, because the calm is temporary and the animal is almost certainly about to go back down to forage.

🐋 What happens when the whale finds its prey?

Contrary to what many people assume, the fight between a sperm whale and a squid is not always one-sided. Squid cannot hear the low-frequency clicks a whale produces, which removes any early warning the squid might otherwise have. Once contact is made, however, the squid does not go quietly. Its eight arms and two long feeding tentacles are lined with hundreds of suction cups, many of which carry sharp, chitinous rings capable of gripping tightly under the extreme pressure found at depth.

The evidence of these encounters is written on the skin of sperm whales themselves. Circular scars, often clustered around the head and jaw, are a common sight on individuals that have hunted squid over many years, and they are widely understood to be the marks left by suckers during a struggle before the whale subdues its prey. Where a whale has encountered a colossal squid rather than a giant squid, the scarring can look markedly different, since the colossal squid’s suckers are armed with hooks rather than smooth rings. These scars are, in effect, a visible record of a contest that plays out far beyond the reach of any camera, most of the time.

Why Dominica Is Where This Hunt Plays Out

Off the west coast of Dominica, the seabed drops away steeply within a short distance of shore, giving sperm whales access to deep water without a long journey out to sea. In some areas, the sea floor is over 800 metres deep straight off the island. The Layou River, the largest on the island, flows down a valley that runs into a deep underwater trench. Nutrients from the river, and nutrients from the deep, mixed together by foraging dives by the Sperm whales, creates a fantastic trophic pyramid, with an abundance of squid, primarily Diamondback squid, just below our toothy apex predators.

Diamond squid, also known as diamondback or rhomboid squid, are a warm-water species named for the distinctive diamond shape of the fins running along the mantle (the big pointy bit). They are substantial animals, reaching around a metre in mantle length and something in the region of twenty to thirty kilograms, and they are unusual among squid in that they are commonly found travelling in pairs rather than in large shoals. Like much of the deep-water community, they move up through the water column at night to feed and drop back down during daylight, which puts them squarely within the depth band where sperm whales do most of their hunting. For a whale that has invested forty-five minutes and a fourteen-hundred to two-thousand-metre round trip in a single dive, prey of that size is worth the effort, and it goes some way to explaining why the population off Dominica has settled rather than moved on. And if they catch a Giant squid, that makes up half their required daily intake in one go.

This geography, combined with a reliable supply of squid, has made the waters around Dominica home to a resident population of sperm whales, rather than simply a place they pass through. Long-term research has documented that these whales live in stable, matrilineal social units of between three and twenty individuals, in which females and their young remain together for life while males disperse as they reach adolescence.

Researchers have identified two resident vocal clans in the Eastern Caribbean, distinguished by the particular patterns of clicks, known as codas, that each group uses to communicate. Over a dozen social units, of at least 120 individuals in total, are regularly recorded off Dominica throughout the year, and the whales that use these waters are thought to belong to a wider resident population of at least 300 individuals in the Caribbean basin. It is this stability and predictability, built up over years of patient study, that allows operators to find these animals reliably and observe them responsibly.

When can you swim with sperm whales in Dominica?

Indigo Safaris has been taking small groups to swim with sperm whales in Dominica since 2015, working under strict permits and alongside a marine biologist guide with more than two decades of experience in these waters. Only three guests enter the water at any one time, which keeps encounters calm and reduces disturbance to the whales, whether that means a brief pass from a single animal or an extended encounter with a family group resting or socialising at the surface. I have been observing them for over a decade now, and have seen young calves grow and mature and eventually leave their family unit, learnt about their personalities, seen the scars on their fins evolve as they journey through life.

Departures run in July and again in November and December, when sea conditions around Dominica are generally favourable for finding whales and spending extended time on the water. These months have consistently produced strong sightings, and the resident nature of the population means that visitors are not relying on chance migration timing in the way they might elsewhere.
