Gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago

Vilankulos (or Vilanculo) is a coastal town situated in the district of the same name in Inhambane Province, named after local tribal chief Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke, and some of the "bairros" (suburbs) are named after his sons. Known as Vilanculos during colonial times, the name was changed to Vilankulo at independence.

Combining Beach and Safari at Vilanculos

The Coastal Half of Your Safari Story

Vilanculos works well as the beach half of a Mozambique itinerary that starts with a safari elsewhere in southern Africa, since it is a short flight from Johannesburg and gives travellers a straightforward way to add coastal time onto a game-viewing trip without a long overland transfer. The town itself is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, and most stays combine time in Vilanculos with a boat trip out to the islands for diving, snorkelling or simply a change of scenery.

Diving conditions are generally good from May to January, with healthy reefs and good visibility, while February and March tend to see stronger winds that can affect dive centre operations, so this is worth factoring in when choosing dates for a beach-and-safari combination. Beach relaxation, dhow safaris and island excursions are available across the year regardless of diving conditions.

Planning Your Vilanculos Stay

Vilanculos is a short flight from Johannesburg, which makes it a straightforward beach add-on at the end of a South Africa, Zimbabwe or Botswana safari, giving travellers a coastal finish without a long overland transfer.

Beyond diving and snorkelling, activities include dhow safaris to the Bazaruto Archipelago, kite surfing, surfing, and general beach relaxation, most of which are available year-round regardless of diving conditions.
