Discover Western Tanzania

Western Tanzania's three parks are the hardest, and in Katavi's and Mahale's cases, the most expensive, to get to. Yet for the intrepid and dedicated few that make it there, they are well worth the effort and the expense.

Why Visit Western Tanzania?

Where Adventure Meets Absolute Remoteness

The main draw of Mahale National Park and Gombe Streams National Park are the chimpanzee sightings, whilst Katavi National Park, the country's third largest National Park, is a remote, untouched wildlife haven visited by less than 1,000 people a year. Often there are fewer than two dozen people in the national park, that covers 4,471 square kilometres.

Best Times To Visit Western Tanzania

Untamed Seasons of Wilderness and Wonder

Western Tanzania offers a remote and wild safari experience unlike anywhere else in Africa. From the chimpanzee-rich forests of Mahale Mountains to the vast, untouched plains of Katavi, each season reveals a different side of this extraordinary region.

🌀 June to October – Dry Season and Prime Viewing

This is the best time to visit. Wildlife gathers around shrinking water sources in Katavi, while Mahale’s forest trails are dry and ideal for trekking in search of chimpanzees. Clear skies and comfortable temperatures make it perfect for photography and extended exploration.

🌀 November to February – Green and Lush

The first rains transform the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of green. Birdlife flourishes, and chimpanzee tracking remains excellent. This period offers fewer visitors and a softer, more intimate safari experience.

🌀 March to May – Wet and Quiet

Heavy rains make travel challenging, and many camps close temporarily. However, for those who venture in, the landscapes are breathtakingly lush, and the wilderness feels truly untouched.
