Masai Mara, Kenya

The Masai Mara rcosystem includes the Masai Mara National Reserve and the adjacent and excellent Mara private conservancies (Mara North, Naboisho, Olare-Motorogi, Olderkesi being the prime ones). One of the  highlights of the Masai Mara National Reserve is the annual wildebeest migration crossing rivers between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. It is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But the Mara River crossing poiunts can be very crowded between July and October, when this happens.  The selection of camp is very important to avoid being with many dozens of other vehicles. During this time, it is better to stay in a concession, with limnited tourist and vehicle numbers, to enjoy the abundant wildife in these superbly run private conservancies, and have a day trip to the Mara River if one really wants to try and see a river crossing. There are also a few conservancies located close to the Sand River, which give a much more exclusive and intimate experience, should the wildebeest and zebra chose to cross when you are there.

Day 1

Day Notes:

Your safari starts with a highlight, taking you straight from the busy city of Nairobi to one of the greatest wildlife destinations on earth: the Masai Mara. After a short briefing about your upcoming safari it is time to head west in your 4×4 Land Cruiser. When city dwellings change into acacias and shrubs, you know you are driving deeper into Masai land.

In the afternoon, you embark on your first game drive around the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Look out for lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes and many other species you expect to see on a safari. Your safari guide will share many interesting facts about wildlife and the Mara ecosystem. You will be surprised how much you will see and learn on only your first day of your safari. When the shadows grow longer, you will make your way to your home for the next three nights, the Base Camp Masai Mara at the banks of the Talek River.

Transfer Time: ~6-7 hours

  • Meet and Greet

  • Transfer from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport [NBO] to Basecamp Masai Mara

  • Check-in to Basecamp Masai Mara

  • Shared afternoon game drive

Day 2 - 3

Day Notes:

Enjoy a whole day of game drives in the magnificent Masai Mara. If you visit the Mara during the Great Migration, stop at the Mara River to witness – with a bit of luck – a river-crossing of wildebeest and zebras, as they swim through the crocodile-infested waters. The Masai Mara is a stunning wildlife destination year-round and any month of the year you can encounter the Big Five and many more. The wind in your hair, take in the vast plains and the breath-taking scenery around you.

You will stay another night at the Base Camp Masai Mara, just outside the game reserve. Since animals don’t mind borders, you should look out for wildlife around camp while you enjoy a sundowner before dinner.

  • Shared full day game drive

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Located in the southern reaches of Kenya, the Amboseli National Park is renowned for its excellent variety of wildlife such as Maasai giraffe, elephant, lion and cheetah and not surprisingly it is one of Kenya's most popular parks. The landscape of Amboseli is dominated by the majestic snowcap of Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as open plains, acacia woodland, swamps and the massif of Ol Doinyo Orok. The birding is excellent, especially closer to the lakes and swamps. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to large herds of elephants among other wildlife species. Other attractions include opportunities to meet the Maasai people and soak up spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

Follow elephant herds and together with your safari guide study their highly developed social behaviour. Along the way, you can spot many more animal species such as cheetahs, wildebeest, zebras and waterbucks. Enjoy the unique moments and take time to appreciate your surroundings. After an exciting day in nature, you will return to Elerai Camp for the night.

Kenya – 14-Day Tailor-made Kenya Safari

Indigo organised everything perfectly, from the remarkable local driver guide to the choice of locations and accommodation.
The safari destinations were wonderful in every way, although the mass migration had left us behind by October. A short stopover between the national parks was at Lake Naivasha, including a boat ride and walking with the animals, and a guided bike ride and hike through Hell's canyon.
A personal driver guide means that you can watch the wildlife for as long as you want - and we certainly did. We saw hundreds of elephants in total but we could also just sit and observe their behaviour for hours if we wished.

In the beginning, we were a little concerned that Indigo Safaris' claimed expertise and super feedback might just be too good to be true.
I am happy to report that Indigo Safaris are exceptional and deserve their accolades and more. A wonderful experience worth every penny.

Kenya – 14-day Tailor-made Kenya Safari & Beach Break

We had an outstanding experience with Indigo Safaris! Kerry crafted our Kenyan trip to perfection, tailoring every detail to our preferences. Our adventure included game drives through Masai Mara, Nairobi National Park, Amboseli, and Tsavo West. Kerry's advice was invaluable, particularly her suggestion to visit Lake Naivasha, which turned out to be an incredibly unique and worthwhile stop.
Every lodge we stayed at was exceptional, offering perfect accommodations, delicious food, and warm, welcoming staff. We truly appreciated Kerry's reliable guidance, sound advice, and excellent recommendations throughout the trip.
Overall, I cannot recommend Indigo Safaris highly enough. Although it was a significant investment for us, the trip truly delivered incredible value.

Kenya Bush and Beach

I worked with Matthew for over 18 months creating the Perfect Kenyan Safari + Chale Island Beach vacation for my husband and I. He was so very patient with me, answered every single question of mine (and there were a LOT of questions - as neither my husband nor I had ever been to Africa!), and gave us all the tips of traveling in Africa, where to go, where NOT to go - and worked with us in such a kind manner while also keeping our budget in mind. I would HIGHLY recommend Indigo Safaris as a tour operator to anyone that wants that Perfect experience in a different land, while also keeping us very safe as well!!!!

Uganda & Kenya – 13-day Tailor-made Uganda & Kenya Safari

Indigo Safaris provided us with an ideal itinerary for our travel to Uganda and Kenya. They were quick to respond to all our communications and were full of great options or ideas and very pleasant to deal with. Kerry Wyatt with Indigo Safaris was our main contact when we made our initial contact with that company to assist us with planning a once in a lifetime trip to East Africa for a gorilla trek and safari experience. She was terrific in setting up an ideal travel itinerary for the two of us, very pleasant and in spite of the time difference was very prompt in providing responses to us with very good input and ideas for our travel.

Jean 11-day Botswana & Victoria Falls Zimbabwe Value-For-Money Safari – Private fly-in

Matt at Indigo Safaris arranged a fantastic trip for us! He was so helpful; willing to investigate every crazy request and answer every question :)

We experienced a wide range of habitats, from delta to desert, and saw the Big 5 plus so much more. A highlight of the trip was something we’d never heard of until Matt suggested it - a night sleeping under the African sky on an open 2-story platform, alongside a waterhole visited by lions, elephants, and other wild creatures throughout the night. The stars were absolutely magical!

All the internal flights arrived like clockwork. We were delighted with the intimate “mid-range” camps we chose with Matt’s advice. Each of them was very comfortable, employed lovely staff, offered good food, and had prompt laundry service. One of the best features of our trip was having close-up encounters with elephants and other animals as they roamed through these small camps.

We followed up our adventure with a stay at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, and it was the perfect touch of luxury after our time in the bush.

We’ve enjoyed previous safaris in Tanzania, Kenya, and the Pantanal Wetlands of Brazil, and we were delighted that Matt and Indigo were able to provide such a totally different experience for us. Would love to work with them again someday!

Kerry was incredible, truly! This was our first trip to Kenya and our first Safari and Kerry listened to what we wanted, made great suggestions and planned a fantastic holiday - thank you Kerry! Fantastic trip, great itinerary, 3 mini safaris within one seeing Amboseli, Laikipia and Mara. The organisation was seamless.
