Masai Mara,

The Masai Mara rcosystem includes the Masai Mara National Reserve and the adjacent and excellent Mara private conservancies (Mara North, Naboisho, Olare-Motorogi, Olderkesi being the prime ones). One of the  highlights of the Masai Mara National Reserve is the annual wildebeest migration crossing rivers between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. It is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But the Mara River crossing poiunts can be very crowded between July and October, when this happens.  The selection of camp is very important to avoid being with many dozens of other vehicles. During this time, it is better to stay in a concession, with limnited tourist and vehicle numbers, to enjoy the abundant wildife in these superbly run private conservancies, and have a day trip to the Mara River if one really wants to try and see a river crossing. There are also a few conservancies located close to the Sand River, which give a much more exclusive and intimate experience, should the wildebeest and zebra chose to cross when you are there.

Day 6

Day Notes:

After breakfast you will join the local fishermen and a guide on a canoe trip on Lake Victoria. You will see how the locals catch fish the traditional way and admire the previous night’s catch. After your fishing excursion you will set off on the longest journey of your safari – the trip to the Masai Mara. The road towards the Kenyan border is a long and adventurous one, but it should be worth it as the “Mara” is reputed to have the highest lion population of all reserves in Africa. Other large cats like leopards and cheetahs also live here and can be spotted all year round, as their sightings are not dependent upon the seasons or the migration. You will overnight in luxury tents at the Mara West Camp on the outskirts of the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Transfer Time: ~8-9 hours

  • Canoe trip on Lake Victoria

  • Check-out from Serenity on the Lake

  • Transfer from Serenity on the Lake to Mara West Camp

Day 7

Day Notes:

You can look forward to a day dedicated to safari and game viewing. On extensive game drives in your 4×4 safari vehicle you will explore the Mara Triangle, located in the north-western part of the Masai Mara. Far stretching grassland plains, dotted by acacia forests, dominate the landscape. You will take a trip to the Mara River, the greatest hurdle for the wildebeests and zebras on their yearly trek. At the end of October and the beginning of November, an incredible scene is set when the river swells to almost bursting levels and tens of thousands of animals prepare to cross it, knowing that possible death awaits them – as crocodiles are hiding just below the water’s surface. It can be a gruesome sight. At other times of the year, hippos, hungry crocodiles, and other animals can also be seen near the river. In the late afternoon, as the shadows start to grow longer, you return to your accommodation and spend another night at the Mara West Camp.

  • Full-day game drive in Masai Mara Game Reserve

Day 8 - 9

Day Notes:

The following two days will be spent on game drives in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Together with your guide you can search for the Big Five. You are in no rush, so you have enough time to enjoy all the wonderful moments which can make your safari a magical experience. The Mara is home to many other interesting animals too, such as Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, elands, and Coke’s hartebeests. Not often seen outside Kenya are the Masai giraffe, roan antelope and the nocturnal bat-eared fox. The reserve also has over 470 bird species including about 60 raptor species. You will spend two nights at the Mara Legends Camp inside the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Tanzania – Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Our safari in Tanzania was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived at Serengeti National Park, everything was fantastic — the camp was perfect, and the experience exceeded our expectations. The warm welcome, enthusiasm, attention, and constant smiles from everyone made our stay even more special.

At Tarangire, we once again enjoyed excellent service, a beautiful tent, and wonderful hospitality. Everything was perfectly organized. We were still delighted with our stay and overall experience.

From start to finish, the trip went smoothly and was perfectly managed. For a first safari in Tanzania, it was an incredible success. Thank you, Christopher, and the entire team for making this such a memorable adventure!

Family Safari to Tanzania: Arusha, Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Central Serengeti, Northern Serengeti, Zanzibar

We had a a great time! This was our first family safari, and it really hit the spot. The planning was thorough and detailed, and the choice of camps and hotel perfect. All the transfers worked seamlessly, and Christopher found us places to stay that we would not have found on our own. Thank you so much.

Great Experience

Jean 11-day Botswana & Victoria Falls Zimbabwe Value-For-Money Safari – Private fly-in

Matt at Indigo Safaris arranged a fantastic trip for us! He was so helpful; willing to investigate every crazy request and answer every question :)

We experienced a wide range of habitats, from delta to desert, and saw the Big 5 plus so much more. A highlight of the trip was something we’d never heard of until Matt suggested it - a night sleeping under the African sky on an open 2-story platform, alongside a waterhole visited by lions, elephants, and other wild creatures throughout the night. The stars were absolutely magical!

All the internal flights arrived like clockwork. We were delighted with the intimate “mid-range” camps we chose with Matt’s advice. Each of them was very comfortable, employed lovely staff, offered good food, and had prompt laundry service. One of the best features of our trip was having close-up encounters with elephants and other animals as they roamed through these small camps.

We followed up our adventure with a stay at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, and it was the perfect touch of luxury after our time in the bush.

We’ve enjoyed previous safaris in Tanzania, Kenya, and the Pantanal Wetlands of Brazil, and we were delighted that Matt and Indigo were able to provide such a totally different experience for us. Would love to work with them again someday!

Amazing Okavango Delta & Beyond

Kenya Bush and Beach

I worked with Matthew for over 18 months creating the Perfect Kenyan Safari + Chale Island Beach vacation for my husband and I. He was so very patient with me, answered every single question of mine (and there were a LOT of questions - as neither my husband nor I had ever been to Africa!), and gave us all the tips of traveling in Africa, where to go, where NOT to go - and worked with us in such a kind manner while also keeping our budget in mind. I would HIGHLY recommend Indigo Safaris as a tour operator to anyone that wants that Perfect experience in a different land, while also keeping us very safe as well!!!!

Uganda & Kenya – 13-day Tailor-made Uganda & Kenya Safari

Indigo Safaris provided us with an ideal itinerary for our travel to Uganda and Kenya. They were quick to respond to all our communications and were full of great options or ideas and very pleasant to deal with. Kerry Wyatt with Indigo Safaris was our main contact when we made our initial contact with that company to assist us with planning a once in a lifetime trip to East Africa for a gorilla trek and safari experience. She was terrific in setting up an ideal travel itinerary for the two of us, very pleasant and in spite of the time difference was very prompt in providing responses to us with very good input and ideas for our travel.
