Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Located in South Africa’s North West Province, close to the border with Botswana, Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the country’s largest wildlife reserves and a renowned malaria-free safari destination. Set within a landscape of open grasslands, rocky hills and acacia-dotted bushveld, it offers a quieter and more exclusive atmosphere than some of South Africa’s better-known parks. Guided game drives offer opportunities to spot the Big Five, as well as endangered African wild dogs, cheetahs, and rare species such as the brown hyena. Early mornings bring crisp air and the distant calls of wildlife, while golden afternoon light transforms the savannah. As sightings can never be guaranteed, patience is part of the experience, but Madikwe’s diverse ecosystems and rich wildlife make every safari memorable.

    Day 1 - 4

    Madikwe Lelapa Lodge is one of three beautifully appointed camps located within a Big Five reserve where the Kalahari meets the bushveld in South Africa. Accommodation options feature spacious and elegant suites with en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, toiletries, tea/coffee-making facilities, air conditioning, minibars, furnished decks, private plunge pools, and safes. Facilities and services include meals, game drive refreshments, snacks, game drives, a children’s club, airstrip transfers, and Wi-Fi.

Day 1

Day Notes:

You will be collected from Johannesburg for your road transfer to Madikwe Game Reserve. Once you arrive at Madikwe Safari Lodge, you will settle in before heading out on your first shared afternoon game drive.

South Africa: 19-day Cape Town, Garden Route & Madikwe Safari

This was my second trip through Indigo Safaris, after Papua New Guinea in August. It came about at the last minute as the coup in Madagascar cancelled a trip booked previously through another company. Christopher spring into action and put together a wonderful itinerary for a trip combining a self-drive along the Garden Route that was so much easier than I thought it would be, tours around Cape Town, and a safari to Madikwe before returning to the Cape.
The accommodations were excellent, and that was before we got an upgrade in Cape Town, the scenery so varied, and the wildlife stunning. I'm looking forward to seeing what can be put together for our next trip with more than one week's notice!
