Discover Lower Zambezi

The river’s edge is overhung with a thick riverine trees, including ebony and fig trees. Further inland is a floodplain edged by Mopane forest and interspersed with Winterthorn trees and big Acacias. The hills creating the backdrop to the park are covered in broadleaf woodland. Even though the Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4092 square kilometres, most of the game is concentrated on the valley floor.

Why Visit Lower Zambezi?

Where the River Rules and the Wild Roams Free

Lower Zambezi National Park is great for different safari experiences with more water-based activities. The park is still relatively undeveloped, its beauty lying in its natural state. The diversity of animals is not as wide as the other parks, but the opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels are very good. The park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the Zambezi River is a massive wildlife sanctuary and home some of the biggest elephants.

Lower Zambezi is an excellent addition to a Luangwa safari, as activities here include boat-baed game viewing, fishing, and canoeing. It can also be incorporated into a Victoria Falls or Kafue National Park itinerary.

Best Times to Visit Lower Zambezi

Seasons of River Life and Untamed Beauty

Lower Zambezi National Park is one of Africa’s most enchanting wilderness areas — a place where elephants wade through shimmering waters and sunsets set the Zambezi River ablaze with colour. While the park’s magic is felt year-round, certain months offer optimal wildlife viewing and river adventures.

🌀 June to October – Peak Safari Season

This is the best time to visit Lower Zambezi. The dry season draws wildlife to the riverbanks, creating spectacular sightings of elephants, buffalo, and predators along the water’s edge. Clear skies and mild temperatures make it perfect for boat safaris, canoeing, and photography.

🌀 November to April – The Emerald Season

The rains bring new life to the landscape. The park becomes lush and vibrant, with excellent birdwatching and striking contrasts of green and gold. While some lodges close during this period, those that remain open offer tranquillity and dramatic scenery.

🌀 May – A Serene Transition

The rains fade, the air clears, and the Zambezi flows strong and full. Wildlife begins to gather once again, making this a beautiful time to experience the park before the dry-season crowds.
