Why Visit Khwai?
Where wilderness meets community spirit
Khwai is renowned for its abundant wildlife, including lions, leopards, painted dogs, and various bird species. With activities like walking safaris, night drives, and boating, it offers exceptional value, making it a popular addition to many itineraries.
- ➡ Wildlife
-
Birdlife such as saddle-billed storks, wattled cranes, and many species of kingfishers and bee-eaters are common, and this is another great area for African Painted Dogs (wild dogs). Even in the low season, sightings in Khwai are prolific.
- ➡ Choice of Activities
-
Khwai camps also offer mokoro trips, and some have boating during high-water season (July to September), as well as walking safaris, so the range of activities on offer is excellent.
- ➡ Accommodation
-
Khwai also hosts some of the best value for money camps in the country, from entry level to luxury, and this is why we often include at least two nights here on our itineraries.
- ➡ Exclusive Activities
-
Being outside the jurisdiction of Department of Wildlife and National Parks, night drives, walking safaris, and driving off track is permitted in the Khwai concessions.
- ➡ Landscapes
-
One of the Khwai concessions, NG18, is privately managed and only has four tented camps on over 200,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, The landscape is fit for a fairy tale: floodplains stretch as far as the eye can see and the glistening waterways and emerald forests attract all the stars of the safari show.
Best Times To Visit Khwai
Seasonal Shifts, Timeless Safaris
Khwai is one of the most consistent areas in the Okavango Delta region for year-round wildlife encounters. Along with excellent game viewing, each season brings its own quirks and charms.
In the winter dry season from June to October, the Okavango Delta is in flood. The rivers and waterways are full and flowing making this the best time of year for water-based game viewing from traditional mokoros and boats.
The African summer season brings the much-longed-for rains and alongside mind-bogglingly beautiful sunsets and thunderstorms, you’ll notice plenty of newborns springing around the plains. The rains, however, are minimal in November and December and this makes it a great time to make the most of low season rates and deals. January and February can be wetter, but the rains tend to fall at night and in the pre-dawn morning. We have had many fantastic sightings in low season, and with very few other visitors to be seen. Birding at this time of year is also excellent as the migrants return from their various corners of the globe to breed and best.
- 🌿 May to October (Dry Season)
-
The most popular time for safaris. As water becomes scarce in surrounding areas, animals gather along the Khwai River, providing exceptional predator and prey interactions. Clear skies, cooler evenings, and excellent game viewing make this the prime safari season.
- 🌿 November to April (Green Season)
-
The summer rains transform the Khwai floodplains into lush, green landscapes teeming with life. This is the best time for birdwatching, with migratory species arriving in abundance. It’s also calving season for antelope, which in turn attracts predators. Expect dramatic skies, vibrant scenery, and fewer visitors.
