Discover Mababe

Where ancient geology, shifting rivers, and raw predator drama converge — one of Botswana’s most compelling and least-visited wilderness areas.

◦       Lying between Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Savuti in Chobe National Park, the Mababe Depression has seen many changes. Since 2007, this previously dried-up ancient lake has become a whole new ecosystem after earthquakes and shifting tectonic plates altered river flows to the area. Located to the south of the Savuti salt marsh, this open savannah edged by forests is very different to the more frequented and forested Moremi Game Reserve, and the Khwai Community Reserve.

◦       In the dry season, from July to November, this vast grey and gold basin becomes the only source of water and nutrient-rich grasslands, attracting huge herds of elephants and buffalo, to the joy of the resident lion population.

◦       But there’s more to Mababe than lions and buffaloes. Giraffes, ostriches, zebras and warthogs intermingle on the Serengeti-like grass plains, along with antelopes such as roan, sable, impala, dainty steenbok, and herds of russet-coloured tsessebe, all potential prey for wild dogs, leopards and hyenas.

◦       Less than half-dozen deliberately small camps that includes Mogotlho, keeping visitor numbers low and the experience genuinely wilderness. No tarmac, no crowds; just the sounds of the bush and a horizon that stretches forever.

Why Visit Mababe?

Mababe sits at a geological and ecological crossroads that makes it unlike anywhere else in the Okavango–Chobe ecosystem. It is a destination that earns its following through sheer, unhurried wildness.

🐾 A Living Geological Story

The area’s transformation since 2007, triggered by earthquakes and shifting tectonic plates, is Africa’s ecology in real time. You are not just on safari; you are witnessing a brand-new ecosystem still finding its form.

🐾 Serengeti-Style Plains in Botswana

Sweeping grey-and-gold grasslands edged by acacia forest create open sightlines rarely found elsewhere in this region, making for dramatic photography and effortless game-spotting.

🐾 Lion & Predator Concentration

Large resident lion prides exploit the seasonal concentration of prey. Wild dogs, leopards, and hyenas add further layers to the predator story and with minimal camp numbers, you rarely share a sighting.

🐾 Genuine Off-the-Beaten-Track

With far fewer visitors than Moremi or Khwai, Mababe offers the Africa of a generation ago: private, unhurried and entirely on nature’s terms.

🐾 Mega-Herds in the Dry Season

As the dry season tightens from July onwards, thousands of elephant and buffalo funnel into Mababe’s remaining water sources; one of the great wildlife spectacles in all of southern Africa.

🐾 Exceptional Birding

The transition zone between savannah and forest edge, combined with seasonal water, draws an extraordinary variety of raptors, waterbirds and grassland species throughout the year.

Best Times to Visit

Mababe’s seasonal rhythms are dramatic. Water defines everything; its arrival, its retreat, and its concentration are the engine behind every wildlife interaction you will have here.

🌿 July – September (Peak Dry Season)

The prime time for game viewing. Elephant and buffalo herds congregate at permanent water, lion activity peaks, and clear skies make for superb photography. Nights are cold but days are warm and dry.

🌿 October – November (Late Dry Season)

Heat builds and anticipation rises. Wildlife concentration remains intense before the rains break. Wild dog denning season can make October one of the most spectacular months.

🌿 December – February (Green Season)

The rains transform Mababe into a lush, flower-flecked plain. Migratory birds arrive in force, calving season brings newborn prey species, and some of the finest predator action of the year.

🌿 March – June (Shoulder Season)

The pans retain water and wildlife disperses more widely. Birding remains exceptional; visitor numbers are at their lowest, making this ideal for those seeking true solitude.

Accommodation in Mababe

The deliberate scarcity of camps in Mababe, less than half a dozen, is a feature, not a limitation. Low bed-night quotas mean exclusive traversing rights, private concession access, and an intimacy with the landscape that higher-traffic areas cannot match. Indigo Safaris has first-hand knowledge of each property and will match you to the right camp.

🐾 Exclusive Tented Camps

Classic safari canvas raised on platforms in the tree line, each tent positioned to capture views across the open plains. Solar-powered, intimate and deeply connected to the bush.

🐾 Mobile & Fly-Camp Options

For the true adventurer, mobile operations move camp to follow the wildlife, while a fly-camp night under the stars brings you even closer to Mababe’s raw interior.
